
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State football freshmen losing their black stripes in the spring used to be a rare event. Prior to this season only four true freshmen had undergone that ritual in which the coaching staff officially grants them Buckeye status. Only Austin Mack, Tommy Togiai, Garrett Wilson and Zach Harrison had achieved that distinction since Urban Meyer started it in 2012. That number might have grown last spring, however, had the coronavirus pandemic not shut down practice after one week. So far this season, five true freshmen have been singled out, following the additions of linebacker Reid Carrico and Emeka Egbuka. Defensive end Jack Sawyer and receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. were the first freshmen honored this spring. Running back TreVeyon Henderson joined them last week.
