Ohio State football’s big 2021 NFL Draft class lacked elite defensive punch needed this fall: Buckeye Take


COLUMBUS, Ohio — In volume, Ohio State football’s 2021 NFL Draft class maintained the program’s exclusive standard. Only OSU produced double-digit draft picks in the past two drafts. In 2022 it could challenge Alabama (2017-19) as the only programs to pull off that three-peat. Justin Fields also gave the Buckeyes a first-round quarterback for the second time in three years. Ryan Day made developing NFL quarterback talent a cornerstone of his philosophy. With a couple of five-star talents on the roster and more on the way, the trend may soon become an identity. Yet OSU’s other established identity skipped draft weekend. A Buckeyes edge rusher or cornerback had been taken in the first round of five consecutive drafts. Two of those years featured one of each.
