Ohio State may have made it to the national championship game in 2020, getting revenge against Clemson in the College Football Playoff semifinal before losing to Alabama, but the stats on one side of the ball did not support the Buckeyes as one of the best teams in the country. After finishing 2019 as the best defense in the nation, the Scarlet and Gray ranked 59th nationally in total defense, largely because of a pass defense that ranked 122nd in the country out of 127 teams. This offseason, a priority was put on fixing that defense, specifically in the secondary. Head coach Ryan Day and defensive coordinator Kerry Coombs believe having a full offseason to work with players and prepare will improve Ohio State on the defensive side of the ball.
