COLUMBUS, Ohio — Strictly speaking, Ohio State did not need more inside linebackers for 2021. Cornerbacks and free safeties? Absolutely. A true nose tackle? You bet. Questions remain about the performance ceiling for multiple defensive positions this fall. When the Buckeyes leaned into the hybrid Bullet as their outside linebacker this spring — and based that position out of the safety group — it compressed all of the conventional linebackers into the other two spots. Between veterans who waited four years for their chance and some promising young talents, OSU might have been able to replicate its 2020 linebacker performance — or at least come close.
