Ohio State president Kristina M. Johnson confirmed a four-year contract extension Wednesday for athletic director Gene Smith, and Buckeyes head football coach Ryan Day resoundingly approved the move. Day took to Twitter with a passionate reaction after the news of Smith’s new deal surfaced publicly. “Congratulations boss on your contract extension! Thank you for everything you do for the Buckeyes! Well deserved!” Day said in a tweet, which ended with the hashtags #gobucks and #4moreyears. Smith, 65, has served as OSU’s athletic director since 2005. After former head coach Urban Meyer (2012-18) retired, Smith considered a national search but ultimately went with Day, who has since taken Ohio State to consecutive College Football Playoff appearances, winning as many Big Ten championships and going 20-1 (15-0) through two seasons.
