It also carries a $250,000 buyout clause if he decides to leave the university before July 2024. “It’s an honor to continue to serve the flagship university in my home state,” Smith told ESPN via text message. “I appreciate the support of President [Kristina] Johnson and the Board of Trustees.” Per the Ohio State website, Smith became OSU athletic director in March 2005 and is widely credited for building one of the true college football powerhouses in the nation.
