Reports: Ohio State AD Gene Smith to receive multiyear contract extension

Ohio State Buckeyes athletic director Gene Smith was set to be out of contract after 2022. It appears that’s no longer the case.  © Kyle Robertson/Columbus Dispatch via Imagn Content Services, LLC ESPN reports Smith will receive a contract extension that runs through 2026, is worth over $2 million per year in guaranteed base salary and supplemental income, and includes bonuses. It also carries a $250,000 buyout clause if he decides to leave the university before July 2024.  “It’s an honor to continue to serve the flagship university in my home state,” Smith told ESPN via text message. “I appreciate the support of President [Kristina] Johnson and the Board of Trustees.”  Per the Ohio State website, Smith became OSU athletic director in March 2005 and is widely credited for building one of the true college football powerhouses in the nation.
