If the pandemic response continues to trend in a positive direction, the Gophers athletics department wants to host a sellout crowd for the football team’s season opener against Ohio State at TCF Bank Stadium on Sept. 2. “If we can open it up, I think that game will sell out pretty quick,” Gophers coach P.J. Fleck said this week. “That will be wonderful for: 1. The University of Minnesota; 2. college football fans in general; and 3. our state and our city. I hope we get an opportunity to do that safely. I know we’ve got a lot of work to do — a lot of work to do — before Sept. 2, especially with that opponent.” The Gophers are monitoring how other venues are opening up this summer, in particular the Twins and Loons, to see what might work for them come the fall.
