Lonsway had the best strikeout rate (21.0 per nine innings) in NCAA Division I baseball in 2020 as a redshirt sophomore, but went unpicked in the following draft — a draft which was limited to five rounds due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This past season, he led the Buckeyes with 98 strikeouts. Over the course of his college career, Lonsway was 12-11 with a 3.89 ERA.
