COLUMBUS, Ohio — How do you define a superior coaching performance — someone who achieves great things with elite talent, or someone who achieves less but gets the most out of more modest talent? The question of who is considered the Big Ten’s top coach — as posed in the 11th annual cleveland.com Preseason Poll — hinged on that interpretation. We asked voters to rank the league’s top three coaches in order. By a 17-16 margin, Northwestern’s Pat Fitzgerald received more first-place votes. The former Wildcats linebacker has made his alma mater a nationally relevant program, winning the Big Ten West in two of the past three seasons. Few coaches in the country do more with less.
