Oregon State has a season opener problem it hopes to fix during camp: Beaver football notes


CORVALLIS – Among things for Oregon State football to shore up in 2021: season openers. The Beavers are 0-3 in season openers under fourth-year coach Jonathan Smith. Some context is required. OSU opened the 2018 season at Ohio State, one of the country’s top teams. The Beavers kicked off 2019 against Oklahoma State, a top 25 team. But in 2020, Oregon State faced Washington State, a COVID-19 impacted program that lost three of its four games. The one win? Against Oregon State, a 38-28 decision in Reser Stadium that arguably was the Beavers’ worst performance of the season. Oregon State didn’t play well, particularly on defense, in a 52-36 shellacking to Oklahoma State. In the 2018 loss to Ohio State, the Buckeyes scored 77 points, the most ever given up by the Beavers.
