Ohio State appeared to have already inserted the knife into the Gophers, taking a 45-31 lead with a little over four minutes remaining in Thursday’s season opener at Huntington Bank Stadium. That proverbial knife was then twisted when, on the next drive, U receiver Mike Brown-Stephens caught a 21-yard pass over the middle and was hit head-to-head by Buckeyes safety Lathan Ransom. Referee Reggie Smith reviewed the play for a catch and fumble but didn’t add a targeting call on Ransom. Gophers head coach P.J. Fleck was irate on the sideline and had a roughly 30-second exchange with Smith.
