Ohio State football linebacker Palaie Gaoteote IV denied immediate eligibility waiver by NCAA


COLUMBUS, Ohio — Barring a successful appear, Palaie Gaoteote IV will not play for Ohio State football in 2021. Buckeyes coach Ryan Day said Thursday that the NCAA denied the former USC linebacker’s petition for an immediate eligibility waiver. Day said he was not certain of the reasons given for the denial, and said OSU would look into grounds for a possible appeal. Gaoteote currently remains on Ohio State’s roster but has not yet been on scholarship. He has been listed in the student directory since mid-June. “We’ll try to figure out what’s next,” Day said. “We’re very disappointed he wasn’t granted an opportunity to play this season. We’ll regroup and see what’s next here.” Gaoteote practiced with Ohio State throughout preseason camp.
