COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State’s defense couldn’t be saved Saturday. Can the Buckeyes’ season be? Seven years after Virginia Tech stymied the Buckeyes during a Week 2 non-conference matchup in Ohio Stadium with a great gameplan while Ohio State was breaking in a young quarterback, Oregon entered the Horseshoe and flummoxed the Buckeyes in a different way, with the same result. Ohio State lost, a rare regular-season occurrence in itself. This 35-28 defeat was the first regular-season loss for Ryan Day as Ohio State’s head coach after 21-0 regular-season start to his OSU career. In 2014, that 35-21 loss to the Hokies was Urban Meyer’s first regular-season loss after a 25-0 start. At this point, any loss short of the College Football Playoff shocks this team and fanbase. The Buckeyes now must question themselves, because in a program accustomed to meeting its established standard of dominance, that wasn’t good enough.…
