COLUMBUS, Ohio — Emeka Egbuka stood up from the turf and slammed the football down in frustration. The Ohio State football freshman had just broken off a 36-yard kickoff return against Tulsa on Sept. 18. It was a wholly positive play at the time, with the Buckeyes down 6-3 early and looking for a spark. Six plays later, they were in the end zone and never trailed again. Egbuka, though, knows how close he came to an historic moment. He had fielded the kickoff two yards deep in the end zone, caught a seam, then got slightly bottled up by traffic. A missed ankle tackle from behind slowed him down just enough that he never got into the open field.
