Ohio State is ranked No. 5 in initial College Football Playoff rankings

If the College Football Playoff was starting this weekend, Ohio State would be on the outside looking in. The Buckeyes were ranked fifth in the selection committee’s initial rankings revealed on Tuesday night. An upset loss to Oregon in Week 2 left a smudge on their résumé and put them one spot behind the Ducks, who would snatch up the last berth in the four-team bracket. Gary Barta, the Iowa athletic director who serves as the selection committee chairman, said the 13 members liked a lot about the Buckeyes, especially their offense. Averaging 47.3 points per game, Ohio State is the nation’s highest-scoring team. “But they don’t yet have a signature win,” he added, “and because Oregon beat them head to head, that certainly was important criteria.” Georgia was atop the rankings, followed by Alabama at No. 2 and Michigan State at No. 3.
