College women’s hockey: Second-ranked Ohio State overpowers St. Thomas 8-1

St. Thomas women’s hockey coach Joel Johnson — and his players — knew there were going to be days like this. Ohio State, the No. 2-ranked team in the nation, beat the Tommies 8-1 on Friday night at St. Thomas Ice Arena, and the outcome was hardly a shock. Just as predictable for Johnson, however, was the focused effort he received from his players. “I was excited about how we played,” he said after the Tommies fell to 4-6-1 overall and 2-6-1 in the WCHA. “We gave up some faceoff opportunities that we need to clean up, but other than that, I’m OK. We didn’t win the game and the score was lopsided, but I’m proud of the way we played.” The outcome was never in doubt, as the Buckeyes improved to 9-2-0 overall and in league play. “They’re big and they’re strong,” said Tommies left winger Luci Bianchi, who…
