Ohio State football should ultimately benefit from the playoff selection committee’s wacky whims


COLUMBUS, Ohio — The College Football Playoff selection committee believes Michigan is the “more complete team” and thus ranked the Wolverines ahead of Michigan State on Tuesday night, disregarding the teams’ recent head-to-head result. Fair enough, I guess. Committee chair Gary Barta said even after the Spartans beat their in-state rival, some on the committee argued that Michigan remained the more complete team. In that case, the committee must also possess performance metrics and similar data compelling them to rank Oregon ahead of Ohio State. As Barta reiterated multiple times in a conference call with reporters — most of who seemed to be confused, bemused or baffled — direct results are merely one consideration, not the be-all, end-all.
