
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Mel Tucker will try to accomplish the near-impossible on Saturday when Ohio State hosts Michigan State. In just his year as the Spartan’s head coach, Tucker will try to knockoff the Big Ten heavyweight and put his team in a better position to get back to Indianapolis for the first time since 2015 and improve their College Football Playoff chances. There’s also an underlining goal that won’t be a topic of conversation around the program and probably won’t even cross his mind. But it’ll still be there. Tucker will try to join exclusive company by beating his former employer. There have been a lot of assistants at OSU in the 110 years of its football program who have eventually branched out on their own and had great careers as head coaches.
