
COLUMBUS, Ohio — For the second consecutive week, Ohio State football plays a Big Ten foe who qualifies for nemesis status. Purdue’s upsets victories have always caught the Buckeyes by surprise. Michigan State, though, carries a very different space in the minds of Ohio State fans. In 2013, the Spartans denied OSU a Big Ten title with a 34-24 victory in the championship game. Two years later, they ruined the Buckeyes’ bid for a repeat national championship with a 17-14 victory in Columbus. For good measure, Ohio State had to fight off MSU 17-16 in 2016 to keep that season’s playoff hopes alive. That was the first of five straight victories in the series for the Buckeyes, and the last time the Spartans seriously challenged for an upset.
