Why Ohio State football should be ahead of Alabama in tonight’s playoff rankings


COLUMBUS, Ohio — Utah did the College Football Playoff selection committee a big favor by finally ending Oregon’s contender tenure. Georgia will remain No. 1 in tonight’s rankings. The conversation for No. 2, however, is more complicated. Was Ohio State’s 56-7 pummeling of former No. 7 Michigan State — arguably not as close as the score indicates — enough evidence that it should jump all the way up to the second spot? Or did Alabama successfully defend its standing with a 42-35 victory over Arkansas, last week’s No. 21 team? In a just world, Cincinnati would also be in this conversation. While selection committee chair Gary Barta mentioned OSU and Alabama in the same breath last week, he did not include the Bearcats in the discussion.
