Ohio State football will play Utah in Rose Bowl, settling for tradition over playoff path


COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio Sate football did not begin the season with Rose Bowl dreams, but must now turn that bowl assignment into a launching pad for the offseason. The Tournament of Roses officially announced the Buckeyes will play Utah in the Jan. 1 game. ESPN will broadcast the 5 p.m. game. Ohio State makes its 16th appearance in the Rose Bowl, but only its fifth since 1979. Traditionally, a season-ending game in Pasadena was the ultimate reward for the Big Ten champion. That changed in the past two decades, however, with the Buckeyes foregoing the Rose Bowl while advancing to national championship contention on a handful of occasions — including the past two seasons.
