What's the deal with all the Ohio billboards in Texas?


If you’ve driven (or sat in gridlock) on one of Austin’s many overpasses in the last year, you’ve likely seen some bright red billboards with curious messages. They declare that Austin is over, and that Ohio exists. These billboards are all over the city: towering over the Chicas Bonitas and Zebra Smoke shop near 38th 1/2 and I-35 northbound; next to the pole dancing studio Brass Ovaries on Koenig Lane; in the parking lot of a kava bar on Barton Springs Road. What they all have in common, their unifying theme is that they contain messages that all of the good things you’ve heard about Austin? They’re actually bad. A recent example: “300 days of sunshine doesn’t matter if you’re always inside working.” Ohio is not-so-subtly positioned an alternative.
