Local colleges roundup: Gophers women’s hockey tops Ohio State 5-3 to split series

The Gophers women’s hockey team exploded for four goals in the first 10 minutes of the second period to overwhelm Ohio State 5-3 on Saturday afternoon in Columbus, Ohio, to end a six-game losing streak against the Buckeyes. Taylor Heise scored two goals for Minnesota in the game, and Maggie Nicholson, Audrey Wethington and Madeline Wethington added one each. Ohio State led 1-0 after the first period before Minnesota stormed back. The Buckeyes outscored the Gophers 2-1 in the final period but could never catch up. Ohio State outshot Minnesota 35-28. The Gophers, ranked No. 2 nationally in two polls this week, improved to 20-7-1 overall and 15-6-1 in the WCHA. Ohio State, ranked No. 3, fell to 19-4-0 and 15-5-0.
