Ohio State football transfers an uncomfortable sign of real progress in secondary: Buckeye Take


COLUMBUS, Ohio — Perhaps it is fitting that Bryson Shaw and Lejond Cavazos leave Ohio State football together, with both submitting their intent to transfer on Monday. Both took more criticism than they deserved in 2021 for problems they did not cause. Cavazos looked overmatched as a redshirt freshman when other cornerback injuries forced him into a bigger role to start the season. Shaw did his best to plug the massive free safety gap left by Josh Proctor’s broken leg in the second game. It was not Cavazos’ fault that Urban Meyer made poor hires after the departure of Kerry Coombs, resulting in a dip in cornerback recruiting. It was not Shaw’s fault that Coombs did not better orchestrate the defense under his return as coordinator.
