Defense shows progress in Ohio State's spring game as offense again looks potent

Barring unexpected regression, Ohio State’s offense should be quite potent again this year. Nothing in Ohio State’s spring game provided cause for alarm about that. More important was whether the defense could show signs of being good enough to carry its weight, unlike in 2021. Spring game rules — no scheming, quarterbacks off-limits from hits, etc. — make definitive judgments impossible. But coach Ryan Day wanted to see enough from new defensive coordinator Jim Knowles’ unit to feel good as spring practice ended. That’s why the Buckeyes tackled in a spring game for the first time in Day’s tenure. For the record, an announced crowd of 60,007 at Ohio Stadium saw the offense (Scarlet) defeat the defense (Gray) 34-26 in a scoring system that awarded the defense points for stops, turnovers and sacks.
