COLUMBUS, Ohio — In elevating the Ohio State football program from struggling to get past its rivals to one competing for national championships, Jim Tressel focused on the talent in his backyard to do so. At the heart of that was Ted Ginn Sr., the head coach of Glenville High School. Since Donte Whitner showed up as a five-star recruit in the 2003 class, 15 other Tarblooders have followed, many of whom played vital roles in the program’s success. Ted Ginn Jr. is still revered as one of the most exciting players in OSU history. Troy Smith went from “he’s the second quarterback in the 2002 class” to a Heisman Trophy winner. Cardale Jones led the Buckeyes to a national title in the College Football Playoff’s inaugural season.
