Gary Moeller, former Ohio State football player turned Michigan coach, dies at 81


COLUMBUS, Ohio — Gary Moeller, an Ohio State football co-captain under Woody Hayes who later posted a winning record as Michigan’s coach against the Buckeyes, died Monday, according to a Michigan news release. Moeller, 81, played linebacker and center for Ohio State from 1961-63. Yet he is more well known for his 23 years with the Wolverines, including five seasons as head coach. He followed Bo Schembechler to Michigan after initially joining his staff at Miami of Ohio and later succeeded the legend as head coach. Moeller led Michigan to a 3-1-1 record against his alma mater from 1990-94. In that span he led Michigan to a Rose Bowl victory over Washington in 1993, won three Big Ten championships and finished in the top 20 all five seasons.
