What C.J. Stroud and Ohio State’s passing offense learned against Notre Dame


COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State football’s coaches spent the offseason trying to tamp down assumptions of brilliance for the 2022 offense. Notre Dame delivered the message to anyone who had not yet received it. It forced the Buckeye offense to work hard, and deep into the night, to secure a 21-10 season-opening victory. Ohio State still put up nearly 400 yards with 22 first downs against the No. 5 team in the country. That the performance underwhelmed expectations says something about how high past precedent has set the bar. “Hopefully we are the offense we want to be,” quarterback C.J. Stroud said. “But that’s not our main goal anymore. We just want to win games. At the end of the day that’s all that matters.” That may be cliche, but consider the other potential outcome.
