Ohio State football’s Matt Jones beat a 102-degree fever before he helped beat Notre Dame


COLUMBUS, Ohio — Matt Jones exhibited patience and perseverance to win a starting job on Ohio State football’s offensive line for the first time this season. It was going to take a lot to keep him out of the season opener against Notre Dame. Then he spent much of last week battling, in his words, “a little fever.” How little of a fever was he dealing with the night before the game? “It was 102 (degrees),” Jones said. In the same way the 6-4, 315-pound Jones is not a little guy, that’s not a little fever. Jones, though, played nearly every snap in the 21-10 victory. He contributed to a run game that averaged 4.9 yards per carry and put the game on its back in the fourth quarter.
