The first play of Jim Knowles’ Ohio State coaching career did not go well last week. The Buckeyes’ new defensive coordinator called for a cornerback blitz, but Notre Dame quarterback Tyler Buchner completed a short pass to Lorenzo Styles. When safety Josh Proctor missed the tackle, Styles turned it into a 54-yard gain. One play into their season, the Buckeyes’ defense faced a moment of truth. It handled it well. Ohio State’s defense stuffed Notre Dame to force the Fighting Irish to settle for a field goal. The Buckeyes then allowed only one more score – an early second-quarter touchdown drive – before putting the clamps on Notre Dame in a 21-10 win.
