Is Ohio State football’s run defense good enough to win the national championship? What the numbers say

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Continuing a midseason analysis of Ohio State football’s national championship potential. Ohio State won the first College Football Playoff in 2014, but was not exactly a defensive trendsetter on how to win a championship. Those Buckeyes ranked 43rd nationally in yards allowed per rushing attempt. Since then, four of the seven champions ranked either first or second in that stat, one ranked 13th and another made the top 25.
