COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio State football narrative Saturday — first spoken into existence by coach Ryan Day, then repeated by quarterback C.J. Stroud — was that the abundance of short fields the Buckeyes were gifted against Iowa prevented the offense from getting into a rhythm. Uhh, OK. Perhaps an offense that came into the game leading the nation in plays of 30-plus yards felt boxed in and confined when teleported onto the field inside their opponents’ 40-yard line. Ohio State settled for field goals on three such instances in the first quarter alone before eventually pulling away for a 54-10 victory. In between the Buckeyes also drove 75 yards for a touchdown. The circumstances suggest Day and Stroud’s explanation has merit — though I doubt either will ask their defense to stop taking the ball away from opponents’ in their own territory.
