EVANSTON, Ill. – Ohio State had to play Saturday with one arm figuratively tied behind its back. Unfortunately, it was C.J. Stroud’s golden right arm. Rain and wind gusts of up to 49 mph at Ryan Field rendered the No. 2 Buckeyes’ explosive passing game almost useless. Inclement weather was about the only thing that figured to give 38-point underdog Northwestern any chance, and the plucky Wildcats managed to hang in until nearly the end. But Ohio State’s running game belatedly got untracked and its defense held Northwestern scoreless in the final three quarters for a 21-7 victory. Ohio State (9-0, 6-0 Big Ten) gained only 283 yards, its fewest since defeating Southern California in the Cotton Bowl in 2017.
