Ohio State football’s pursuit of cornerbacks in the transfer portal could be tricky


COLUMBUS, Ohio — Cornerback appeared to be a position of promise for Ohio State football last spring, with a steady veteran and young talent combining to potentially rotate from strength. Instead, the position endured various stages of frustration. Numbers were already a problem before multiple corners missed time in preseason camp. That lack of practice reps contributed to performance issues once the season began. Then came another bout of injuries that forced true freshmen onto the field and stretched that dangerously thin depth. Secondary coach Tim Walton and the Buckeyes’ defensive staff are currently confronting two potentially conflicting responsibilities. They must coach this group up to help beat Georgia in the Peach Bowl on Dec. 31. They must also consider possibilities in the transfer portal who could raise the baseline performance next season.
