Michigan rusty after long layoff, shelled by Ohio State


ANN ARBOR – Ohio State’s hockey team returned from winter break last week with a sweep over Michigan State. No. 6 Michigan hadn’t played since Dec. 10 when it took the ice against the eighth-ranked Buckeyes on Friday night at Yost Ice Arena. The rust was glaring. OSU dominated from start to finish, outshooting Michigan 52-21 in 7-2 victory. Despite being outshot 23-7 in the first 20 minutes, Michigan (12-8-1, 4-7 Big Ten) entered the second period tied at one. Then came an OSU barrage. The Buckeyes (15-7-1, 8-5) fired 13 shots at goalie Erik Portillo in the first 6:21 of the period and scored once. They continued to attack in waves, adding three more goals in the next 11 minutes, including two on the power play. Michigan, though, had a chance to get back in the game late in the second.
