How Brian Hartline’s arrival and Ryan Day’s epiphany changed Ohio State’s coaching structure


COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ryan Day is the doodling mastermind, drawing up plays that have fueled Ohio State football’s prolific offense for the better part of a decade now. Brian Hartline is not. He did not absorb the tendencies and best practices of his offensive coordinators with the Buckeyes, Browns and Miami Dolphins. Ending up as Ohio State’s offensive coordinator in the winter of 2023 remained outside of his life plan. Both men eventually came to realizations about where their coaching lives would lead. For Day, it came when myriad head coaching responsibilities in the modern game piled up again in the back half of the season.
