COLUMBUS, Ohio — For the majority of Jim Knowles’ career, he was known as a defensive coordinator that wasn’t afraid to bring the pressure. For five games this season, Ohio State has backed off the blitz. And it’s a transition that hasn’t been very difficult for Knowles. The Buckeyes blitzed only a handful of times in their 37-17 win over Maryland on Saturday, in part due to the mobility of opposing quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa, but in part because that’s the way the defense has spent the 2023 season. For Knowles, while it might appear weird on the surface, the change has been as smooth as can be expected. “You never know what we’re going to do,” Knowles said Wednesday, sporting a sly grin.
