Michigan-Ohio State 2023 matchup to feature two closely-linked 5-star QBs


ANN ARBOR – J.J. McCarthy took a visit to Ohio State in March 2019 wondering if that was his potential college home. The class of 2021 five-star prospect from Nazareth Academy near Chicago grew up a Buckeyes fan and received offers from Michigan and OSU following his sophomore season. But the Buckeyes underwent a coaching change heading into 2019 as Ryan Day took over for Urban Meyer. Day continued to recruit McCarthy but also was pursuing other five-star options, including Philadelphia St. Joseph’s Kyle McCord. According to a 2019 article in The Athletic, Day told McCarthy that OSU wasn’t planning on taking a commitment from a quarterback until later that summer, which would have given McCarthy more time to weigh his options.
