For The Ohio State Buckeyes, The Best Is Yet To Come

Bob Donnan-USA TODAY Sports En route to avenging last year’s lone loss to the Virginia Tech Hokies, the Ohio State Buckeyes won a football game that was kept close in the first half, but then Urban Meyer’s squad flexed plenty of muscle in the second half. Throughout the night, a new name each quarter penned his name atop the Heisman hopeful list for the Buckeyes. After the team’s first drive, Cardale Jones took the top spot. Following an 80-yard touchdown run that seemed fluid and effortless, Ezekiel Elliot proved why he was a preseason favorite. In the third quarter, Braxton Miller dazzled his way to the top of the Heisman charts. And J.T. Barrett showed in the fourth quarter why you shouldn’t forget about him despite his current label as the team’s backup quarterback.  The Buckeyes racked up 572 yards of total offense, including 360 yards on the ground. Despite carrying the football two fewer times than his quarterback, Elliot gained 122 yards on 11 carries including his 80-yard scamper. The defense, while it certainly bent, didn’t break in the second half. However, the loss of quarterback Michael Brewer certainly did change things for Virginia Tech. Still, the Buckeyes defense played, at least statistically, well. They forced seven punts, recorded four sacks and forced two turnovers.  But with all of the good that was on display on Monday night in Blacksburg, the Buckeyes still weren’t at their best. …
