PISCATAWAY – In their first-ever trip to the hallow birthplace of college football, the defending national champion Ohio State Buckeyes may have reached a fortuitous turning point in starting J.T. Barrett. Barrett, who took the reins of Urban Meyer’s high-octane tempo offense in a 38-10 romp over visiting Penn State, accounting for five total touchdowns in a 49-7 rout of a hapless Rutgers team. Granted it was against a short-handed Scarlet Knights team missing five starters on defense who were involved in a home invasion at the start of the season, they will catch no sympathy from any scarlet-and gray supporters who have seen their own amount of adversity. With Barrett now under center and in firm control under center for Ohio State, which racked up 528 total yards of offense in distributing the ball to Jalin Marshall, Michael Thomas, Braxton Miller and Ezekiel Elliott, the Buckeyes team that many expected to see this season, may now be arriving. In completing 14-of-18 passes for 223 yards and three touchdowns and rushing for 101 yards on 13 carries for another two on the ground, the efficient and dual-threat Barrett is why Ohio State is now playing like THE Buckeyes. With apologies to Sparty, That Team Up North, Utah, Clemson, Florida State—thanks for playing!, Baylor, TCU and all of SEC Nation, but it seems that Ohio State’s offense is finally beginning to click on all cylinders in outscoring their opponents 87-17 in their last two games. In winning their 21st straight—the longest in the country—and 28th regular-season conference win in front of a national audience, many in Ohio can now exclaim, “THIS is Buckeye’s football!” With Ohio State rolling into their bye week and big games looming against Michigan State and That Team Up North, the Buckeyes’ offense looks ready to take things to the next level. You know, what’s really scary…
