College football: Rutgers head coach candidates increase

Since joining the Big Ten Conference, Rutgers has lost twice to Ohio State by large margins. Now it has an interest in the Buckeyes’ two coordinators as it begins its search for a new head coach. Although former Temple and Miami head coach Al Golden is believed to be the front-runner for the Rutgers job in some circles, Cleveland.com reported that the Scarlet Knights are interested in Ed Warinner, Ohio State’s offensive coordinator, and FoxSports.com reported that Chris Ash, Ohio State’s co-defensive coordinator, has been added to Rutgers’ list of candidates. In his first season as Ohio State’s offensive coordinator, Warinner replaced Tom Herman, who became Houston’s head coach. The Buckeyes are averaging 35 points per game. Warinner, 54, also coaches Ohio State’s offensive line and recruits New Jersey extensively. Earlier this week, he visited Rashan Gary, the Paramus Catholic defensive lineman who’s the top uncommitted senior in the country. A graduate of Mount Union, Warinner, who’s been at Ohio State for four years, has coached at eight schools, including Notre Dame. He was an offensive coordinator at Kansas and Army, where he spent 13 years. Ash, 41, has extensive Big Ten experience.
