Report: Ohio State to hire Greg Schiano as defensive coordinator

Greg Schiano hasn’t coached anywhere since 2013. (USATSI) It looks like Greg Schiano will finally be returning to a college football sideline, though not as a head coach. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Ohio State is set to hire the former Rutgers coach to be its new associate head coach/defensive coordinator. Schiano would be replacing current defensive coordinator Chris Ash, who is leaving Ohio State to take over at … Rutgers. I don’t know about you, but right now I’m picturing a baboon holding up a baby wearing a headset while Elton John sings about the circle of coaching. Anyway, Schiano has been out of the coaching game for a few years now. He was last seen in the NFL with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he went 11-21 in two seasons before being let go following the 2013 season. Since then, he’s done some television work for ESPN while trying to work his way back into the coaching ranks. Before going to Tampa Bay, Schiano had spent 11 seasons at Rutgers, where he inherited a football program that hadn’t had much of any success, and built it into a winner over time. In fact, you could say that if Greg Schiano had never shown up at Rutgers, the school wouldn’t be in the Big Ten right now. And now it appear Schiano will be in the Big Ten as well, at Ohio State, where he’s no doubt hoping that a year on the sidelines in Columbus will lead to him getting a head coaching job this time next year…
