Ohio State’s Urban Meyer says Alabama’s Nick Saban not ‘the best’ ever

Alabama’s Nick Saban and Ohio State’s Urban Meyer have been rivals for nearly a decade, but they consistently show respect for one another on and off the field. This September, Saban called Meyer “the best” coach in football. Meyer, the current coach at Ohio State, recently told GridironNow.com’s Buddy Martin that Saban, who just won his fifth national title, is “one of the greatest in the history of college football,” but stopped short of calling him the greatest. “I don’t want to say ‘the best’,” Meyer said. “One of the top two or three.” The Buckeyes coach did not list his top three, but there’s little doubt he wants to count himself in Saban’s league when all is said and done. Ohio State topped Alabama in last year’s College Football Playoffs en route to Meyer’s third national title, and OSU figures to continue its success for several more years under his watch. Meyer has been paying attention to Saban’s recent work; specifically, the successful onside kick call in this month’s national title game and the Crimson Tide’s hiring of offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin. “I think what he’s done on offense with Kiffin was impressive,” Meyer said. “He has really adapted. And that’s the key to being a great football coach. Adapting, moving forward and keeping on moving and understanding momentum — which he does.”
