Former Ohio State assistant George Chaump passes away at 83

Buckeye Nation has lost one of the program’s great assistant coaches as George Chaump passed away on Sunday. Chaump was 83 years at the time of his death. A cause of death has not been made immediately available. Chaump’s head coaching career began in 1961 at Shamokin High School in Pennsylvania, followed by six seasons at John Harris High School. In those six seasons, Chaump’s teams went 58–4. He began his college coaching career at Ohio State in 1968 under legendary head coach Woody Hayes. He remained on the Scarlet and Gray staff for 11 years until 1978. After leaving Ohio State, Chaump became an assistant coach with the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers under head coach John McKay until 1981.
