COLUMBUS, Ohio — The next shift in the NCAA transfer landscape could come via a plan designed by the Big Ten Conference. According to CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd, Big Ten athletic directors proposed last October that athletes be allowed to transfer once with immediate eligibility. The legislation, which could not go into effect earlier than 2021, would mandate those transfers occur within a five-year window of eligibility. Athletes in men’s and women’s basketball, football, baseball and hockey are required to sit out a “year-in-residence” after transferring before being eligible to play at their new school. “I’m supportive of (the one-time exemption),” Oho State athletic director Gene Smith told ESPN. “I think it was almost unanimous. “At the end of the day, we need to provide those kids in those five sports the same opportunities as those in the other sports have.
