
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Kristina Johnson’s first Ohio State biography says her grandfather — member of OSU’s Class of 1896 — played right guard on one of the Buckeyes’ first football teams. Johnson, approved Wednesday morning as OSU’s next President, brings her own collegiate athletics background to the job as well. Johnson earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees and a PhD while at Stanford. She also played field hockey and founded the women’s lacrosse club team — which is now a varsity sport. The State University of New York system — where Johnson had served as chancellor since 2017 — has Division I sports, though without the Football Bowl Subdivision designation. She did serve stints at Colorado and Duke in academic capacities. Johnson’s wife, Veronica Meinhard, is senior associate athletic director at Maryland overseeing fundraising efforts.
