COLUMBUS, Ohio — College football players have decisions to make that are both personal and professional, that balance the fleeting present with an unknown future. While more than 30 NFL players have so far decided to opt-out of the 2020 season because of issues relating to COVID-19, only two college players have announced that choice. One is Illinois running back Ra’Von Bonner, who has asthma, and the other is Virginia Tech cornerback Caleb Farley, whose mother died of cancer in 2018 and who is projected as a potential first-round NFL Draft pick. Health reasons, personal family reasons, future professional reasons — all those factors are certain to be considered by other players. But I wouldn’t brace yet for a rash of college player opt-outs.
