What’s up with Ohio State football’s Cody Simon, Mitchell Melton and Tommy Eichenberg? Buckeye Bits


COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State football has not established an identity at Sam linebacker during Al Washington’s tenure. Pete Werner, versatile and rangy, handled that role in 2019 during Washington’s first season. Werner moved inside last season and turned Sam over to Baron Browning, previously known more for his ability to create pressure off the edge, and solid tackler Justin Hilliard. All of the above moved on, leaving Washington to find a new starter outside this fall. Asked what attributes the next Sam needs to display this spring, Washington flipped the question around. Ohio State will determine which linebacker(s) need to play and tweak the Sam usage accordingly. “Whatever skill set that guy has, you play to that,” Washington said. “That’s one that you can kind of mold around the player.
