
Ohio state senator Niraj Antani has proposed a name, image and likeness (NIL) bill to go into effect on July 1, allowing college athletes to profit off their amateurism. Antani made the announcement Monday during a news conference at Ohio State, where he was joined by Buckeyes athletic director Gene Smith. Antani said he’s been working with Ohio State on the legislation for about a year and a half, but the COVID-19 pandemic delayed progress on getting the bill formulated and introduced. “Today stands as a marker that the NCAA and federal government should act,” he said. Sixteen states have passed NIL legislation so far, and in six of those – Alabama, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi and New Mexico – the laws will take effect on July 1.
