
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Jocelyn Gates made it her mission to tackle Ohio State football. As South Florida’s senior deputy athletic director in charge of football, Gates oversaw football scheduling. She repeatedly contacted Martin Jarmond, her Ohio State counterpart at the time, to try to get on the Buckeyes’ schedule. “As soon as I called Martin, he said no, absolutely not,” Gates said. “Like, ‘Why not?’ But at that moment, I decided I’m gonna reach out to him once a month and continue to ask for a game. “Every month. I did that for three years.” Ohio State has still never played the Bulls. Gates, though, will now apply that tenacity to the other side of the Buckeyes’ football scheduling.
